Physical Education Department Courses

All students are required to complete 20 credits of Physical Education to meet the California State requirement for a high school diploma. Students can complete these credits in a variety of ways: take PE classes, take dance classes, or participate in our athletic program. Students can also combine any of these options as long as they earn 20 credits of PE before June of their graduating year. For students who choose to use our athletic program to satisfy their PE credits, each successfully completed season of sport will earn 5 credits of PE.

Core Physical Education 1

Length: 1 year. This course is an introductory class offering a variety of sports and fitness activities. Daily dress and participation is expected. Core 1 is a pathway to the advanced physical education classes at Nordhoff. In order to qualify for advanced classes a student must successfully complete Core 1.

Core Physical Education 2 

Length: 1 year; grades 10, 11, 12. This course is an introductory class offering a variety of sports and fitness activities. Core 2 covers most of the same activities as Core 1. In certain areas it goes into greater detail. Core 2 is for students who enjoyed the variety of activities of Core I or are new to Nordhoff physical education or need to qualify to take advanced physical education courses. Daily dress and participation is expected. Core 2 may be repeated.

Personal Fitness

ALSO AVAILABLE FOR FRESHMEN PROVIDING THEY MEET REQUIREMENTS

Length: 1 year; grades 9,10,11,12.

Prerequisite: Recommendation by current physical education staff or junior high physical education staff Students need to get signed approval from current physical education class in order to be enrolled in personal fitness.

This class is for the student who has had difficulties in a traditional physical education class or has health or physical limitations that prevent performance at the standard level expected in other physical education classes. The goal is to improve fitness level of students and prepare them for enrollment in a Core Physical Education class. The class includes a variety of individual and team sports. This is a pass/fail class with the possibility of variable credits. May be repeated only with written consent of instructor.

Length: 1 year; grades 9,10,11,12.BY SPECIAL PERMISSION ONLY

Spinning for Fitness

Length: 1 year; grades 9,10, 11, 12

Held in the Nordhoff Spin room, this course follows the curriculum of the internationally known Spinningprogram. Equipped with Star Trac spin bikes and led by certified Spinning instructors, this class involves indoor cycling set to music. Other aerobic activity will be included in the class as will a written final/project both semesters. Enrollment in this class is limited due to the number of Spin bikes.

Weight Lifting/Conditioning

Length: 1 year; grades 9,10, 11, 12.

The most demanding of the physical education classes, this course is for students who wish to improve and maintain physical fitness in the areas of strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility. This class has longer aerobic activities than other classes. Emphasis is on proper skills in lifting weights and performing heavy resistance exercises while striving for body efficiency..

Dance I: Introduction to Dance

Length: 1 year; grades 9,10, 11, 12.

A beginning class for the student who has had little or no background training in dance, this class emphasizes cardiovascular endurance, physical strength, flexibility, injury prevention, nutrition and wellness through the exploration of various forms of dance (jazz, ballet, modern, tap, folk/ethnic dance). Dance I focuses on developing introductory skills in dance technique and a lifetime commitment to physical activity. Students will have the opportunity to perform one to two times per year. Students must maintain a notebook of choreography learned in the class with information learned about dance history. Students must see a minimum of one live performance and write dance critiques. With teacher and counselor approval, can be repeated for credit.

Dance II: Technique

Length: 1 year; grades 9,10, 11, 12.

Prerequisite: Dance I, or by audition with instructor consent. Student needs to have and maintain a 2.0 GPA in order to be eligible for the required live performances. An intermediate level class for motivated and committed students who have one year or more of training in dance, this class provides an in-depth creative experience through the exploration of various forms of dance (jazz, ballet, modern, tap, folk/ethnic dance). It focuses on increasing competency in dance technique, performance and choreography while gaining academic comprehension of the historical, social, emotional and personal context of this discipline. Students can participate in performance opportunities that will be offered locally approximately four times. Students must create their own dance works with instruction in choreography, partnering, dance forms and improvisation. Students will instruct other dancers in their original choreography see a minimum of four live performances and respond critically in written form. With teacher and counselor approval, can be repeated for credit.
