Superintendent's Message

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! Whether your student is joining us for in-person or  distance learning, all of us at Ojai Unified are eager to welcome our students and families back.

This year will be unique as we return to school but still continue to navigate the challenges of COVID.  One of the greatest challenges through this pandemic has been the constantly changing information and requirements that make it difficult to plan for what lies ahead. I encourage all of us to remain patient, flexible, and understanding of one another as we navigate this dynamic situation together.
Even through the challenges of COVID, over the last two years our little district has been improving. Just a few examples include: 1:1 devices for nearly all grades,  fresh and clean campuses, revamped lunch menus, and expanded learning opportunities for students throughout the district. No matter what we have ahead of us, we are committed to providing the best for our students through continual improvement.

To ensure that the return to campus is as smooth as possible, we have provided a Back to School webpage here with school site and district information and you will also be receiving a packet in the mail. We are looking forward to engaging with our families this year. If you are interested in volunteering, please use this form to let us know.

COVID Update

We know that there are many questions about this new school year and what it will look like in terms of COVID protocols.

Our Family Resource Guide will give you the most up-to-date information about our COVID health and safety protocols for the coming school year. You can access this guide here or aquí.  

Our goal is to return our schools to as close to pre-COVID normal as possible. In order to do this, Ojai Unified is required to follow the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) requirements. Here are the guidelines at this time:

  • Per CDPH guidelines for all schools, face coverings are required to be worn by everyone indoors.
  • Students and staff should self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms before coming to school. 
  • Students and family members who are feeling ill, including experiencing a fever of 99.5 or above, should stay home. 
  • If a student tests positive for COVID, please notify the school. A link to symptoms and CDC protocols can be found in our Family Resource Guide.
  • We encourage all who can receive COVID vaccinations to do so, but vaccinations are not mandatory for staff or students.
  • We will continue to practice the safety and sanitation techniques that we implemented last year.
  • Classrooms will be provided with hand sanitizer and personal protective equipment.
  • Healthy and non-symptomatic vaccinated students and staff will not need to be quarantined if they are exposed to a COVID-positive or symptomatic individual.
  • Physical distancing will no longer be required; we do encourage staff and students to practice social distancing when possible.
  • Visitors may be restricted in schools. On the first day of school, parents will be able to walk their students to class.
  • Volunteers will be allowed on campus as COVID protocols permit, but the number may be limited. More information will be provided by school sites after school starts. 
Distance Learning Options

We understand that not all families are comfortable returning to in-person instruction at this time. For any families who would like an alternative setting this year, we have several options. Summit School is our option for elementary students and Matilija Online and Nordhoff Online are available for students in grades 6-12 who prefer distance learning through independent study. Bell Schedules

As we prepare for the start of school, we have finalized our bell schedules. Our start times have changed in large part due to Senate Bill 328, which requires that all high schools start after 8:30 am. In order to accommodate this change, our elementary schools had to move to an earlier start time in order to accommodate transportation options for students. You can find the bell schedules for each site below. 

This change, as well as the purchase of an additional bus,  presented us with an opportunity to revise our bus schedules. The new schedules will be finalized and available online and at school sites by next week.
